18 Thomson
the glue that holds family together
Family is the crux of many Asian families and that rings true for the owners of 18 Thomson. Countless beautiful childhood memories were made here and when the opportunity to take over their late grandparents’ home arose, the owners saw it as the perfect location to raise the new generation.
Refreshed and renewed, the space now boasts a timeless colour palette of soft cream hues and deep walnut brown. A column in the front porch bears the handprints of the current owners, both big and small. Some signs of the past were retained, like the exterior floor tiles to the flowering frangipani tree planted by the late grandmother that will now watch the next generation blossom as it did for members of the earlier generation.
Inside, rounded corners and circles are common motifs. They are a literal representation of the hope the family has for the future, to be 团圆 (tuán yuán), to be ‘reunited; all together’.
